“We had to stop Pat Buchanan gushing over Obama’s speech…”

I wanted to write an incisive post about The Speech. About how it was a great speech, but not the speech I wanted. But I realize that the speech wasn’t for me, one of the kool-aid drinking, text message receiving true believers, but for everyone who is was thinking “yeah, but. . .” about Obama. I wanted rhetoric equaling, if not surpassing the speech that was given 45 years ago to the day. I wanted a political speech rivaling the New Hampshire defeat “Yes We Can” speech. I didn’t get it. It was better than what I wanted. In fact, it was so good, MSNBC had to cut Pat Buchanan off in the middle of his effusive praise of the speech.

Yeah. I wanted some lofty rhetoric. I wanted a “. . .Fear Itself” or “Ask Not . . .” moment tonight. Guess dude’s got to save something for his inauguration.

Fucking Text Message.

Much like everyone vaguely interested in who Obama would pick for the VP slot, I was waiting for that magic text message. I thought this was going to be the new media VP rollout. Why, oh why, then, did I learn about it from the BBC? I mean, as far as “old media” outlets go, you don’t get much more older, better or venerable than the BBC, but seriously guys. Apparently the WaPo broke the story, but it made it to my awareness via the BB-fucking-C. I thought this was going to be a great thing where us young hip txt mssg rotfl cu ltr kids got the news first and the “media” and their “unnamed sources” could sit and spin. I waited all week for this?

(To be fair, I only signed up to receive this magic text message yesterday. I’ve yet to get any, VP related or not. Maybe I just got on this bandwagon too late. Did anyone get the magic text message before I did?)

Oh, for anyone who didn’t click my links, It’s Biden

(Update) Between hearing it on the BBC and finishing this post, I got the text message. I still resent the fact (though admire the vague poetry) that I learned of all of this via Fergus Nicoll.

And also, what a coup that the Obama campaign kept the CNNs of the world on edge all week, only to send that magic text message at 2:43 am CDT on a Saturday Morning. Played them like a fiddle. I love it.

This is just too good to pass up.

By now you’ve probably all know that John McCain can’t remember how many houses he has. 4? 7? no, yelloooow.

Over the last day or so Obama has basically been administering a textbook beat down on the issue, releasing 2 ads, and sending dozens of surrogates out across the country to rub McCain’s face in it. McCain’s defense:Get Out Of Gaffe

But here’s where it takes a turn for the Hi-Larious. McCain’s newest surrogate: Robin Leach. You know, host of Lifestyles of the Rich And Famous.

Robin Leach isn’t your usual political pundit. But the former champagne-toasting host of the TV hit of the mid-’80s to mid-’90s, “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” may be more qualified than most to opine on John McCain’s now-infamous inability to remember how many homes he owns.

In an early morning phone call Friday from his fabulous crib in Las Vegas, Leach told The Times that he isn’t really surprised at McCain’s odd memory lapse given the complex lives that the super-rich lead.

“He probably was confused as to which homes are in his name, his wife’s name, or corporate names,” Leach explained in his familiar, deep British baritone. “In his attempt to be honest, he put his foot in his mouth.”

(Emphasis Mine)

Caviar Dreams, indeed.
